Prediction of mechanical and fracture properties of rubber composites by microstructural modeling of polymer-filler interfacial effects

Surface-induced and volume-induced effects of filler on the reinforcement is separated to predict mechanical properties. A sophisticated finite element model is built by experimentally-obtained volume and properties of the interphase. Tight bonding of filler to polymer is not desirable for crack growth resistance. Interfacial effects reduces crack driving force by lowering local strain and inducing viscoaelasticity.
