Generation, ascent and eruption of magma on the Moon: New insights into source depths, magma supply, intrusions and effusive/explosive eruptions (Part 1: Theory)

We model lunar mare basalt magma ascent and eruption with new data (crust, density). We find that all lunar magmas were negatively buoyant everywhere in the lunar crust. Melt excess pressures >20–30 MPa at/below crust–mantle interface enabled eruption. Farside eruption paucity implies restricted vertical source zone range: ∼16–36 km. Magma volume fluxes from partial melt zones dikes are ∼105 to 106 m3 s−1.
