Fibre laser nitriding of titanium and its alloy in open atmosphere for orthopaedic implant applications: Investigations on surface quality, microstructure and tribological properties
Direct laser nitriding in open atmosphere was performed on CP Ti and Ti6Al4V. Process parameters were optimised to produce gold-coloured TiN surface. Image analysis using ImageJ was conducted to quantify surface discolouration on TiN. Size distribution of wear debris in FBS was characterized by dynamic light scattering. Friction and wear properties were strongly affected by hardness and microstructure of Ti.
