A hospital-based study of rotavirus infections in adults in Shanghai, China. The predominant genotype was G9P[8], followed by G2P[4] and G1P[8]. Emerging G9-VIeP[8]-III strain caused a epidemic in local adults during 2014–2015. Rotavirus should be included in the clinical diagnosis of adult gastroenteritis. Infection from child-to-adult transmission is the key epidemiologic setting.
