Hip fractures involve distinct patterns of focal osteoporosis in the proximal femur. We found less cortical and trabecular bone in key areas in those with acute hip fracture. Focal osteoporosis determines fracture location (femoral neck or trochanteric). Defects were detected using clinical CT scans of patients.
