There is a widespread belief that academic writing is becoming more informal. We explored a corpus of the 5 top journals in 4 disciplines in 1965, 1985 and 2015. We found only a small increase in the use of 10 key features over the past 50 years. Increases occurred only in the hard sciences and were restricted to three main features. This represents changes in rhetorical conventions of interaction in the hard sciences.
