The ethanol conversion is directly linked to the basicity of the material provided by the La₂O₃ phase detected at the catalyst surface.

The La_1,3FeO_3+δ is the most efficient formulation to transform ethanol into n-butanol (i.e., 2%) and into 2-pentanone (12%).
