FE models of cement-bone interface were used to study how implant loosening occurs. Interdigitated bone micromotion and strain increased toward the distal interface. Interdigitated bone is strain shielded compared to the underlying supporting bone. Proximal interdigitated bone showed large decrease in strain post-operatively. Strain adaptive remodeling of interdigitated bone could lead to implant loosening.
