First CDC-accredited data for vitamin D metabolites in over 1000 umbilical cord blood samples. 46% of umbilical cord sera had 25(OH)D concentrations <30 nmol/L and 80% were <50 nmol/L. Maternal smoking during pregnancy was a negative predictor of cord 25(OH)D [−4.83 (−7.9, −1.5) nmol/L]. Cord 25(OH)D was not associated with birth weight or any anthropometric measures at birth. Cord 3-epi-25(OH)D3 was negatively associated with gestational age and maternal age.
