MAC-T cells are a suitable model for lipid transport studies in the mammary gland. Cholesterol and phospholipid transport in MEC is mediated by apoA-1/ABCA1 and ABCG1/HDL dependent pathways. ApoA-1/ABCA1 activity in MEC causes activation of intracellular signaling cascades (JAK-2, MAPK). The transported cholesterol stems mainly from the plasma membrane. Insulin plays an important role in regulating lipid transport in MEC.
