A bird with a broken beak of endangered Grus japonensis species was saved by additive manufacturing. Prototyping by fused deposition modelling (FDM) with polymer (polylactic acid) allowed bespoke validated design. Selective laser melting (SLM) allowed the fabrication of final light weight, strong and corrosion-resistant beak. Case study shows how personalized medical care can be provided efficiently, accurately and cost-effectively.
