Microalgal biofilm growth under day-night cycles

Microalgal biofilm growth can be more efficient than growth in suspended culture. Microalgae synthesize functional biomass from starch during the night. Microalgae decrease their respiration rate ten-fold during prolonged darkness. Diurnal carbon-partitioning in microalgae was described mathematically. Diel variations in light limited microalgal biofilm growth were predicted accurately.
