Naturally occurring esculin (ESC) was successfully encapsulated in sodium alginate/chitosan hydrogel matrix.
The final microparticles (ACPs) were fabricated with both external, and internal gelation methods.
ACPs were described with regard to structure, size and morphology, swelling and release kinetics.
ACPs protected ESC in the simulated upper gastrointestinal tract, and enabled its release in the simulated intestinal fluid.
