Microwave-assisted pre-carbonisation was used for charcoal preparation. Palm kernel shell was pre-carbonised using microwave system at 250–300 °C. A high higher heating value of 27.63 MJ/kg was achieved. The low gaseous emission met the Malaysian Ambient Air Quality Standard (2014).
