Microtopography was captured in 0.25–2 m LiDAR DEMs but not in 5 m DEMs.

1–2 m LiDAR DEMs were optimal for modelling hydrologically sensitive areas.

Breakthrough and delivery points were observed and predicted along runoff pathways.

Reductions from 40 to 2 points m−2 did not affect elevation accuracy of 1–2 m DEMs.

The approach could significantly improve CSA identification and targeted mitigation.
