At 112 K C70 fullerenes tend to form islands of a chained shape. At RT C70 arrays exhibit 3×1 stripe-like superstructure. The superstructure is built of single bright C70 rows mediated by double dim C70 rows. The superstructure is not related to the structure of the underlying Au/Si(111) substrate. Behavior of C70 is controlled by their non-spherical shape and strong C70-C70 interaction.
