A significant earthquake in the Hawassa caldera occurred in January 2016. The refined event location suggests that Wonji faults around the caldera are active. Earthquake magnitudes of 4.68 (ML) and 4.29 (MW) are determined. Focal mechanism shows normal fault slip on a N-S trending structure. Further monitoring and public outreach are suggested in the Hawassa basin.
