Novel task for assessing children’s delay of gratification. We examined motivational and regulatory influences on children’s delay behavior. Motivational (anticipatory) behavior curvilinearly related to delay time. Executive function crucial for regulating high levels of anticipatory behavior. Observed self-control strategies beneficial for low executive function children.
