NO produced by nitric oxide synthases (NOS) signals through cysteine S-nitrosation. Several distinct chemical mechanisms can result in cysteine S-nitrosation. Transnitrosation reactions can transfer nitrosothiols between protein cysteines. NOS isoforms can be auto-S-nitrosated by the NO they generate. Selectivity of nitrosation may occur via colocalization/direct interaction with NOS.
