Altering the nifA gene or eliminating the draT2 gene have no effect on the growth of Rhodopseudomonas palustris. Manipulation of nitrogen-regulatory genes effectively enhances the ammonium tolerance of photosynthetic bacteria. Hydrogen production decreased with the increase of ammonium concentrations.
