Flow hydrogenation enables the safe, selective synthesis of aryl hydroxamic acids. 1,10-phenanthroline improves product selectivity in this Pt/C-catalyzed process. The hydroxamic acid is produced selectively over the lactam by-product (49:1). The flow hydrogenation method is useful for a variety of 2-nitrophenylacetic acids.
