A novel example of particle-stimulated-nucleation is highlighted. The nitriding was done using 15N2 to enable quantitative analysis of Si and Ni by APT. Minor elements Al, Ti and Mn significantly enrich Si3N4 particles. Al-N clusters provide nucleation sites for Si3N4 precipitates. The nucleation sites density of Si3N4 is imposed by the density of Al-N clusters.
