Effect of shot peening and treatment temperature on wear and corrosion resistance of sequentially plasma treated AISI 316L steel

Shot peening (SP) was trialled on AISI 316L before sequential plasma processes. SP prior to sequential plasma processes increased the near-surface hardness. Shot peening (SP) also increased thicknesses of carburized and nitrided layers. Superior wear resistance was achieved by SP and plasma processes at 475 °C. SP partially counteracted the deleterious effect of chromium nitrides on corrosion.
