A 3D ocean model is used to examine the tidal stream resource in the Pentland Firth. The upper bound of the mean tidal stream resource is estimated as 5.3 GW. The upper bound scenario may have a major impact on the physical environment. The extractable power of lower impact, more realistic scenarios is also quantified. 3D models should be used for resource assessment & impact studies in complex areas.
