In order to further enhance the degradation of the hydrogen peroxide related reactions, a series of reactions were investigated to compare their degradation efficiency. It was proved that hydrogen peroxide alone was not capable of decolorizing the dye significantly. Under 254 nm ultraviolet irradiation, the decolorization efficiency was dramatically increased compared with the oxidation by hydrogen peroxide alone. The dye was also subjected to the degradation by potassium permanganate and subsequent hydrogen peroxide oxidation due to the limited oxidation capacity of potassium permanganate. Acidic and alkaline conditions were proved to be favourable for the dye decolorization, while the lowest decolorization efficiency was always observed at pH 7.0. The combined oxidation by hydrogen peroxide with potassium permanganate and ultraviolet irradiation was proved to be especially effective and has the potential for practical water and wastewater treatment.
