Two learning pathways are identified: native improvisers and immigrant improvisers. Native improvisers began to improvise spontaneously, without extrinsic incentive. Immigrant improvisers started to improvise to fill a gap in their musical practice. A learn-unlearn process underlies improvisational expertise development.
