Canine osteosarcoma (OSA) is highly malignant and has a poor overall survival rate. The effects of etoposide against canine OSA with or without piroxicam were evaluated in vitro. Etoposide inhibited canine OSA cell growth, inducing G2/M arrest and Cdc2 phosphorylation. Etoposide caused apoptosis in canine OSA cells, whilst piroxicam induced further chemosensitisation. In vitro, the combination of etoposide and piroxicam modulated survivin expression and augmented apoptosis.
