Extensive household survey (n = 606) of perceived impacts of tree plantations in Indonesia. Acacia (pulpwood) tends to be perceived differently from pine and teak. Companies in remote areas tend be seen as substitutes to states for local development. Local dynamics, beyond plantation types, seem to explain differences in perceptions. A series of recommendations for improved plantation management are provided
