Viral infections are commoner than bacterial infections in cystic fibrosis. Rhinovirus is the most common respiratory pathogen in all seasons. Multiplex PCR can effectively screen for respiratory viruses. Viral infections should be considered in routine follow-up of cystic fibrosis. The ratio of viral to bacterial infections decreases with age.
