The mechanical loading of 150 kPa is the moderate pressure for chondrocyte: cell proliferation and apoptosis is balanced, necrosis is reduced, and chondrogenesis and hypertrophy are promoted. When the pressure is lower (50 kPa and 100 kPa), proliferation increases, apoptosis and necrosis decrease, but chondrogenesis and hypertrophy are inhibited. When the pressure is at 200 kPa, proliferation decreases, apoptosis and necrosis increase, and synthesis of collagens are down-regulated, which indicate the degeneration of cartilage.
