α4 subunit of 20S proteasome forms high molecular weight complexes in vivo. These complexes are most likely rings and form even in wild-type cells. First in vivo evidence of proteasome CP subunits existing in non-canonical complexes. Opens possibility to functional role for CP subunits outside of the proteasome.
