Comparison of gamma and electron beam irradiation in reducing populations of E. coli artificially inoculated on mung bean, clover and fenugreek seeds, and affecting germination and growth of seeds

Gamma ray is compared with e-beam for effects on E. coli and growth of three seeds.

E. coli cells are more resistant to gamma ray on fenugreek than on other two seeds.

Electron beam at doses of 4–12 kGy can not completely inactivate E. coli on all seeds.

Gamma ray at high doses reduces germination rate and yield while electron beam does not.

Surface morphology varies among the seeds and E. coli cells reside in cracks and openings of seeds.
