Coal contains U, Th and Po that can be released into the atmosphere. Coal-fired thermal power plants and mining are sources of U, Th and Po. Mosses, lichens and ferns act as bioindicators of the air pollution in Southern Brazil. Biologic and environmental aspects influence the bioaccumulation mechanisms. Mosses are more sensitive to accumulate radionuclides, followed by lichens and ferns.
