Development and testing of a model for simulating weathering and trace elements release from fixated scrubber sludge utilized in abandoned coal mine reclamation site

This paper presents a coupled flow and reactive transportl model for coal combustion byproducts used in mine reclaimation. Chemical formula and kinetic rate constants were derived from laboratory study and optimized based on leachate experiment. The leaching potential of trace elements, such as arsenic, boron, barium, zinc in the FSS were simulated. The model simulated geochemical reactions between CCBs and ambient groundwater, including kinetic reactions. The model successfully reproduced many characteristics of water chemistry observed from the field.
