Variable optical attenuator based on a reflective Mach-Zehnder interferometer

In this manuscript, we investigate a VOA on silicon using a reflective-MZI structure.

Bragg-gratings work as broadband efficient reflectors at the ends of the MZI arms.

The present VOA enables an intrinsically-high extinction ratio.

The power consumption is reduced by half in comparison with the regular MZI-type VOA.

For our device, the power consumption is about 10.8 mW for an attenuation of 35.5 dB.
