Dynamics of water and matter transport in the Elbe estuary, one of the main rivers entering the German Bight, cause deposits of mud in the waterway up to Hamburg Harbour. Accumulation of suspended particulate matter at sites of continuous dredging activities in the freshwater region were reproduced with a Lagrangian tranport model. These sites coincide with nodes of odd overtides, which are induced by reflection and deformation of the tidal wave from the German Bight. Amplitudes and phases of overtide velocities, derived from measurements as well as model results, give indications of the existence of standing waves. However, the influence of topographically induced deformations of the tidal wave on suspended particulate matter dynamics in the Elbe estuary is obvious but still to be proved.
