ZnO/La2O3 composite modified by 5% alkaline-earth metal (Mg, Ca), and rare-earth metal (Y) were prepared by using glucose sol-gel method. The effects of varying doping on structures, morphologies, and optical properties of ZnO/La2O3 composite were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and PL techniques. Different doping gave rise to novel and special morphologies of ZnO/La2O3 composite with different amounts of oxygen vacancies. Amongst the samples, Ca-doped ZnO/La2O3 composite with network distribution achieved the highest photodegradation of phenol (99%) after UV light irradiation for 3.5 h. Photocatalytic activities correlated with the structures, morphologies and oxygen vacancies of the samples were investigated.
