Powder samples of pure and Ti-doped ZnAl2O4 were prepared using a sol–gel route. Raman spectra were undertaken in order to get an insight into the local (dis)order. Lattice dynamics calculation of the ZnAl2O4 phonons were performed within the DFT. Band gap is found to be 4.732 eV in the pure ZnAl2O4. Active T1u and inactive T1g, A2u, Eu, T2u phonons appear due to Ti doping.
