Multihead Weighers are widely used for packing small items in a variety of industries. No methods exist to select the mean hopper (heads) weights, needed before start-up. The mean weights have a critical impact in the performance of these machines. New methodology is presented to determine near-optimal mean hopper weight settings. Characterization of optimal solutions led to an excellent heuristic (R code included).
