Sugar beet yield on silt loam was lower for strip compared to full-width tillage. Reduced yield was caused by delayed field emergence and decreased nitrogen supply. Both affected early leaf development and thus, efficient light interception. Fibrous root growth was reduced in non-tilled between-row area under strip tillage. Nitrogen use efficiency was not affected by the tillage system.
