Urban growth patterns were explored in terms of: a) urban patches, b) urban growth forms, and c) urban land uses. Analysis of change indices and spatial metrics revealed a rhythmic temporal variability at different levels of urban land use. Phases of dispersion and compaction were characterized by specific sub-processes and lower-level patterns. Urbanization in Treasure Valley is characterized by low density, sprawled development. Results support: a) the hypothesis of urban growth phases, and b) an emerging trend of urban densification.
