We studied the value of spruce retention patches embedded in dispersed retention. Severe blowdown was observed in patches surrounded by clearcuts. Patches surrounded by dispersed retention well maintained saproxylic beetles. This impact was most notable for predatory species. Combinations of aggregated and dispersed retention have better conservation value.
