Phase-pure lanthanide orthotantalates were synthesized by solid state reaction. Far-infrared spectroscopy was employed to obtain the dielectric properties. LaTaO4 ceramics exhibited the best microwave dielectric response. LaTaO4 shows ɛr = 21.2 and estimated Qu × f ≈ 77 THz. All LaTaO4, DyTaO4, NdTaO4 and LuTaO4 ceramics could be useful microwave materials.
