Characterization of syringyl and guaiacyl lignins in thermomechanical pulp from oil palm empty fruit bunch by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using ion intensity calibration

Thermomechanical pulp (TMP) fabricated from empty fruit bunch (EFB) of oil palm were separated into four fractions. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass-spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) indicated chemical feature of lignin in the TMP fractions. Eight lignins pyrolysis products were successfully determined through calibration obtained by total ion intensities. Syringyl/Guaiacyl ratio by Py-GC/MS have a good correlation with syringaldehyde/vanillin ratio by nitrobenzene oxidation.
