The macrobenthos communities differed greatly on opposite sides of tidal barriers. Freshwater releases had a generally positive effect. The tidal barriers and freshwater releases had interactive effects. The tidal barriers are required to contain the freshwater. The retained freshwater is restoring the original freshwater ecosystems.
