Mechanism of γ-irradiation induced phase transformations in nanocrystalline Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 ceramics

Mn atoms are more unstable in the Mn-Zn ferrite spinel lattice than Zn-atoms. Displacement of Mn atoms by γ-radiation from the lattice renders phase transformation. In Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4, Mn-ferrite cell transforms to crystalline α-Fe2O3 and amorphous MnO. The stable ZnFe2O4 phase retains its structure even after 50 KGy γ-irradiation. The γ-irradiation degrades the magnetic properties of Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 ceramics.
