The paper presents the mathematical basis of a method used to model the detailed behaviour of the individual components of flexible pipe sections. Bonded and unbonded types of pipe are considered. Homogeneous layers are dealt with as thick-walled continua while the helical wires are treated as curved beams with axial, bending and torsional stiffnesses. Four commonly used wire sections are modelled. This paper focuses attention on the treatment of the wires. The loading on the pipe section includes tension, torque, shear forces, bending moments and wall pressure and temperature differentials. The effect of friction is included. Deformations, such as curvature, may also be prescribed. The analysis permits layers to separate in unbonded pipe and for wires within a layer to make contact. A postcontact analysis is performed for axisymmetrical loading. Wire gaps, contact stresses and slippage are considered together with material stresses, strains and individual wire loads. Some results from the program FLEX-ABLE for a typical pipe section subjected to axial loading and to bending are presented.
