A new colorimetric, electrochemical and fluorescent chemosensor based on ferrocene-naphthalene conjugate is proposed. Selective detection of Hg2+ in very low limit of detection (2.6 ppb) was observed. Good sensitivity and selectivity for Hg2+ cation on paper-made test kits and on supported solid silica are reported. Binding modes with Hg2+ have been demonstrated on the basis of the 1H NMR titration, ESI–MS and DFT analysis.
