Vasomotor symptoms are associated with sympathetic overactivity, which, in turn, is associated with metabolic syndrome. The relationship between menopausal hot flushes and metabolic syndrome is complex and not all data show an association. More data are needed on the association between vasomotor symptoms and both metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk. Women with long-lasting hot flushes should be screened for underlying metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.
