Glu side chains in lipid bilayer membranes may remain neutral up to pH 12. TM helix properties depend upon specific locations of titrating Glu residues. Glu residues alter TM helix dynamics. A TM helix may unwind locally near a Glu residue. One expects buried carboxyl groups to be aggressively hydrated.
